Falcons QB battle may already have a winner
While the Atlanta Falcons have stated both Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa will compete to earn the starting quarterback role, they have also acknowledged such competition cannot officially begin until Penix Jr. is cleared to be a full participant in all team activities, which the third-year quarterback spoke to the media this week during mandatory minicamp and said he is working to be ready to play Week 1.
On Wednesday while discussing Atlanta’s quarterback situation, 92-9 The Game’s Carl Dukes and Mike Bell shared thoughts on comments by a listener, who stated he believes the Falcons need Tagovailoa to win the starting job. “This is not going to be a reward before you exceed expectations situation,” Dukes said as he explained why he believes Tagovailoa has the potential to perform well enough to get a long-term deal with Falcons.
“Tua [Tagovailoa] has been the better quarterback,” Dukes said. “I can’t tell you what Michael Penix [Jr.] is going to do once camp starts or through the preseason. What I can tell you is the body of work, and it’s a little bit unfair because [Michael] Penix has only started 12 games, but the body of work is not even close. Tua [Tagovailoa] has been a starter in this league, he’s already gotten his first bag,” Dukes said, noting Tagovailoa’s current contract is a result of “proven” success in the NFL.Tua Tagovailoa's experience reason enough to be Falcons QB1
