CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- This summer is looking "not-so-hot" for people hoping to enjoy themselves in the traditional ways in west suburban Aurora.
The July 4th parade and evening fireworks are cancelled, along with the Aurora Pride Parade and the Puerto Rican Heritage Festival. And Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin said because of expected crowds, you won't be able to cool off in either of the city's pools.
"Folks these decisions are not easy ones. They are made in unison with each entity and for the best interest of the entire community," Irvin said.
Irvin said the city has cancelled just about all the big summer events that could draw a crowd and help spread the COVID-19 virus.
Tim Rater, President of the Aurora Civic Center Authority, said the Paramount Theater will remain dark this summer and all of the RiverEdge concerts are cancelled. But there's some good news.
"We have nearly every artist confirmed for next summer, and those that aren't confirmed are interested in coming back, they just need to put their tours together, their routes together, and make sure the dates all line up.
Still he agrees it's devastating to have to make announcements, but they need to help stop the spread of the coronavirus, which could thrive in crowds.
Mayor Richard Irvin said there will, however, be one Farmer's Market held each Saturday downtown; but there will be several health-related precautions.
