(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Aurora’s mayor is using the crossing of a coronavirus milestone to stress the importance of doing all that’s possible to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Officials say there have now been more than 5,000 people who've tested positive for the coronavirus in the second-largest city in Illinois, and 118 residents have died of COVID-19.
Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin was one of those who contracted the virus and said Friday people must do their part by not taking part in big get-togethers with the Labor Day weekend approaching. If people are going to gather at all, they should "gather wisely,” he said.
"It is something I wish for no one to ever have experienced. Yes, I recovered like most diagnoses, but the impact on our quality of life is severe and the residual effects are long-lasting,” he said.
He urges people to wash their hands, watch their distance from others and wear masks.
Aurora does not have a mask shortage, so there’s no reason for people to go without one, the mayor said.
He also advised to get a flu shot now.
