CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mothers can get a free meal from a neighborhood Latin American restaurant to celebrate their special day.

For Mother's Day on May 10, La Celia Latin Kitchen in Avondale is giving away free lunch box meals to all mothers who visit the restaurant between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to give back to the community and show support for families during the pandemic.

"During times like these, we want to do an extraordinary gift to all moms," wrote the restaurant owners on Facebook. "We understand there are hard times for everyone and we want to invite all moms to visit La Celia."

Jorge Pizaña, co-owner of La Celia, told Telemundo Chicago that moms are the most important person in the family and the team wanted to honor that through what they know best: providing families with food.

"Giving is better than receiving," Pizaña said in Spanish. "It's always good to have a nice gesture with the community, in this case with mothers."

The event is also a way for the restaurant to say thank you to the neighborhood for its support during the shutdown. The owners of La Celia, who also own Tacos Tequila down the street, closed for a few weeks in April but reopened May 6 for delivery.

Families can get one free lunch box to go at La Celia's, 2890 N. Milwaukee Ave., on Sunday while supplies last.
