(WBBM Newsradio) -- Temperatures flirted with 80 degrees on Tuesday afternoon under sunny skies, but beware: Thunderstorms very likely will follow tonight.

Across the Chicago area, temperatures were easily in the 70s, as the Illinois stay-at-home order continue and people were discouraged from congregating in groups.

Now, for the bad news: Showers and thunderstorms were expected in late afternoon and in the evening for much of the Chicago region, with overnight lows in the 50s. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until late tonight for areas north of Interstate 80. Hail and strong winds could be part of the mix.

A new Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued across much of northern IL north of I-80 & far NW IN as storms in southwest WI continue to grow. Main threats with any storms that can develop this evening are large hail and possibly some strong winds. #ILwx #INwx https://t.co/VHLovRNw8k
