CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough joined the cast of “Hamilton” and hit the streets to get people registered to vote.
"You registered to vote yet?" she asked Tuesday as commuters walked by the CIBC Theater.
A “yes” answer received thunderous applause from the crew from her office.
"We've got a registered voter here," she cheered.
“Hamilton, to me, makes you think about your place in history,” Yarbrough said. “How do we make our mark, how do we make our time here on Earth matter? One way to do that is to plug into the process, and that is to get registered to vote and make your voice be heard."
Ebrin R. Stanley plays James Madison in the long-running musical.
"We're coming full circle with the election coming up," Stanley said. "Just like in ‘Hamilton,’ it's more important than ever to have your voice heard. The first step is to get registered to vote. It's super easy, it takes just a few minutes, you can do it. If you think you've already done it, let's check and make sure.”
Adam Grisby was the day's first voter to register.
"The 2020 election cycle is going to be huge," Yarbrough said. "We're going to elect a president, we're going to do a lot of stuff, we got judges, everybody. Don't wait until the day before. Although you can register and vote the same day, we want you to do it beforehand."
To register to vote, Chicago residents must be a citizen, at least 17-years old by Primary Day, March 17, and a resident of their precinct for at least a month.
