Chicago: 1,000th COVID Death, More Illegal Parties

Chicago City Hall

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Monday said the city of Chicago reached a grim milestone this past weekend: the 1,000th death from the novel coronavirus.

And yet both Lightfoot and Health Commissioner Allison Arwady note Chicago has not been hit as hard as some major cities.

"A month or so ago, we were seeing our deaths also doubling every three days, every four days," Arwady said.  "We're now at a point where we're seeing that doubling about every 15, 16 days, and that is a sign of significant progress. But we are not yet on the downward trajectory."

That is why the mayor says the stay-at-home order and social-distancing restrictions must continue. She said she's trying to get through to young people that those house parties police broke up over the weekend are very dangerous.

"Their being out, in these congregant settings, at this time, where we know that's how the virus spreads, they're taking that back home with them and literally bringing death to their doorstep," Lightfoot said.
