CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The union representing Chicago police officers wants to bar Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx from handling certain cases.

A letter drafted by Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 cites a "deep mistrust" as the reason union officials want a special prosecutor – rather than Foxx – on any cases in which a police officer is a crime victim or has been accused of misconduct.

The police union says it no longer believes that Foxx's office will treat its members fairly.

It points to two cases in which special prosecutors have been appointed. One of the case involves "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett; the other, activist Jedidiah Brown.

Foxx's office says it is committed to seeking justice on behalf of all crime victims and will not let what it calls a political stunt to get in the way.
