CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago freelance photographer wants to make you smile from behind the screen.
Photographer Will Byington is offering free virtual photo sessions to spread cheer and positivity amid the pandemic.
Byington said he decided to try his own project to be creative and connect with others in isolation after seeing award-winning photographer Jeremy Cowart's project Love Transported take off online, as well as photographer David Bergman's virtual efforts.
His goal is to showcase people in their homes to bring some levity and fun at this time when everything is canceled. And since he normally photographs what makes Chicago fun — like concerts, sporting events and parties — finding a creative outlet to still capture that laughter felt fitting to the longtime photographer and his style.
So far, he said he has done about 10 photoshoots with people in Chicago and nationally, including friends, family and strangers. He has photographed a wide range of people in different places, and that's what makes it exciting.
Like most artists and freelancers, Byington relies on events, shows and social gatherings to make money as a photographer. Now, he said this project is forcing him to be creative and socially connected in a new way that also showcases creativity from the other side of the camera.
“I want to see what people create because I do think it’s awesome seeing what everyone is doing,” he said.
While he said the portrait sessions are free for now, he asks for donations via Venmo or Paypal.
