CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The city is reminding all workers and businesses that Chicago employees are protected from retaliation for staying home from work to follow a COVID-19 public health order.
According to the Mayor's Office, under the Anti-Retaliation Ordinance and current public health orders, employers are prohibited from firing, demoting, or retaliating in any way against an employee for staying home to self-quarantine in adherence to the Emergency Travel Order. Workers are also protected from retaliation if they stay home while sick or exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.
To help workers and businesses understand their rights and responsibilities under the Anti-Retaliation Ordinance, the Chicago Office of Labor Standards will host a webinar this Thursday, July 9 at 2 p.m.
Titled “Anti-Retaliation Protections during COVID-19”, this webinar will provide an overview of the protections offered to workers during COVID-19 and how the Emergency Travel Order impacts Anti-Retaliation. This order directs travelers entering Chicago from a state experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases to quarantine for a 14-day period.
Workers are encouraged to call 311 or submit a complaint via the 311 app if they are fired, demoted, or otherwise retaliated against for staying home to follow a public health order related to COVID-19, including the Emergency Travel Order.
