(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago City Council was expected to approve a nearly $4 million settlement for a former police officer who was reassigned after she complained about abuse from another cop.
Now retired, Laura Kubiak worked in Police News Affairs, handling reporters’ questions. She complained about a colleague’s abusive behavior and said she was then assigned to a patrol shift in a dangerous neighborhood.
She sued the city in 2014 and offered to drop the lawsuit if the department just put her back in News Affairs. They didn’t. Now, the case is being settled for $3.8 million.
Mayor Lightfoot said the Chicago Police Department needs to do better to insure that officers who report misconduct are given the support they need. She said this will be an issue in the upcoming contract talks with the Fraternal Order of Police.
Aldermen say they’re upset because this case could have been resolved at no cost to the taxpayers.
