Illinois State University employees who handle building maintenance, grounds, and dining services delivered a 10-day notice Thursday signaling a potential strike if contract negotiations fail. AFSCME Local 1110, which represents roughly 350 workers, said 97% of members voted to authorize a strike.
A strike authorization does not automatically halt work, but it allows the union to call a strike on or after the notice period ends April 8. Union leaders say members have not received a raise since July 2024. They are seeking higher wages and a guarantee that union workers receive the same pay increases as nonunion employees.
ISU said its latest offer included annual raises, a $350 one-time ratification bonus, and increased pay for second and overnight shift workers. The offer did not include retroactive pay, a point the union has pushed for.
Mediation sessions are scheduled for March 28, April 2, and April 4.
Union and university remain far apart on wages, retroactive pay, and benefits.
