A City Council hearing Thursday outlined what Chicago police and others are doing about swarms of loud motorcycles doing stunts and racing along city streets. The City Council Public Safety Committee played a pair of CBS 2 news reports of motorcycles -- sometimes numbering in the hundreds -- dangerously defying the law. Video showed the vehicles performing wheelies on an expressway, and speeding past pedestrians on Michigan Avenue.
Downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly said he knows it’s too dangerous for Chicago police to chase the riders, but he suggests using a helicopter to help identify them.
Police Cmdr. Sean Loughran says CPD is considering that and using License Plate Recognition cameras. The problem is, he says, many of the offending riders either don't put license plates on their bikes or obscure them.Ald. Pat Dowell, who called for the hearing, said something must be done.
