CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- During the pandemic, many people are running into restaurants to pick up food instead of parking and dining in, and Chicago police said they have to be careful.

Chicago police sent out a tweet with a video with an obvious but important reminder to not leave the keys in the car, even if you are away from your vehicle just momentarily.

CPD said vehicle theft is often a "crime of opportunity" and that commercial and delivery drivers or the average person picking up a snack can be the victim of theft, saying "it only takes a second."

The Des Plaines-based National Insurance Crime Bureau said that on every single day from January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2018, an average of 209 vehicles were stolen across the U.S. because drivers left their keys or fobs in their vehicles making them attractive targets for thieves.

CPD wants to remind you that when you’re picking up at curbside to take your keys with you. Help CPD drive crime down and don’t be a victim to vehicle theft. #CPDMediaCar pic.twitter.com/tZmeBLzp87
