CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A week after a gunman killed five people before police killed him in Aurora, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said he wants changes to state gun laws.
Now, when someone in Illinois has a firearm owner identification card revoked, they receive a letter asking them to surrender the card and any guns they have.
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said such a voluntary system is woefully inadequate.
Investigators say Gary Martin, the man accused of killing five people in the Aurora shooting spree before police killed him, had his Illinois FOID card revoked in 2014 after police learned of a violent attack he was convicted of in Mississippi in 1995.
