(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services said Wednesdya it is conducting a review to understand its "shortcomings" in handling the child-welfare case of Andrew Freund Jr.
DCFS has said it's had dealings with the boy's family since Andrew, or A.J., was born with opiates in his system in 2013.
The last contact DCFS had with the family before this month was in December of last year "while investigating allegations of abuse and neglect" against the child's mother, which DCFS determined to be unfounded.
Now DCFS says it's "conducting a comprehensive review of the entirety of our work with Andrew’s family to understand our shortcomings and to be fully transparent with the public on any steps we are taking to address the issues."
A.J.'s father reported him missing late last week from the family's Crystal Lake home.
A.J.'s younger sibling is in DCFS custody.
