Food & Wine: Memorial Day Weekend

Wine and Barbecuing

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- On this holiday weekend, we pay tribute to those who served, and we also get together to celebrate.

Certified wine expert, Ron Breitstein has this week’s food and wine suggestions.

As we approach summer, we arrive at the first long weekend to barbeque and picnic. As you finalize your plans, here are some nice food and wine combinations to enjoy.

You have the grill fired up and you are putting burgers and hotdogs on it – try a smooth, easy drinking red blend or a nice Chianti from Italy.

Putting a steak on? Try a robust Cabernet-Sauvignon or hearty Zinfandel from California. A rack of lamb calls for a spicy Pinot Noir from Burgundy, France or New Zealand.

If you like chicken, Breitstein suggests a smooth Merlot or spicy Gewurztraminer. And for salad lovers, he suggests trying a crispy Sauvignon Blanc from California or New Zealand.

If you like to do a lot of delicious appetizers, Breitstein loves to do bubbles, be it champagne from France, sparkling wine from California, Prosecco from Italy, or Cava from Spain.

And if you have a Rose, it will go with almost anything you like.
