(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With plans to build a second Fisher House for military veterans and their families in Cook County, volunteers are turning to golf for financial help.
"We're hoping it's going to be the first of many," Betty Stamatis said. "This'll be the trial run."
Stamatis, President of Friends of Fisher House-Illinois, is referring to the Last Hurrah Top Golf Benefit in Naperville, set for Oct. 13.
"People hit golf balls from weather-controlled bays," she said. "It's great for golfers and even those who don't play. We'll give out prizes for the best and worst scores."
With the Hines VA Fisher House often at capacity, a second facility for military family lodging and meals is now in the works, and Stamatis said the golf outing will raise funds and awareness.
"A lot of people think that this kind of support is only necessary during major wartime. There are remaining problems, such as Agent Orange and its effects, that last for years."
"The government takes good care of the veteran, but families are often on their own in terms of being with them."
