Hate Crimes Increase In Chicago: Official

Chicago City Hall

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Hate crimes are up in the city, Chicago's Human Relations chief said.

Mona Noriega, who's headed Chicago's Commission on Human Relations for about a decade, delivered the news to aldermen at a budget meeting on Wednesday.

She told them that hate crimes were up 60 percent this year over 2018. The biggest categories of crimes have dealt with immigration status, sexual orientation and religion.  She says 77 hate crimes have been reported to the commission by police so far this year. There were 78 for all of last year.

And she predicts tensions may increase next year as the national elections get underway in full force.
