CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The lakefront is expected to be a dangerous place through Saturday, and meteorologists are discouraging people from going swimming or even venturing too close.

Waves could reach heights of 4 to 6 feet along the lakefront in Illinois, Indiana and southwest Michigan, says the Chicago-based National Weather Service, which warns of rip currents.

Chicago’s lakefront trails and beaches are closed to the public as the city discourages people from congregating. NWS officials say people should follow any posted signs and should not venture onto jetties or piers.

The advisory is in effect through Saturday evening.
