CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The number of reported coronavirus cases in Illinois has risen to 105, with cases now coming from 15 counties, state health officials said Monday.

The latest tally represents an increase of 12 from the last update, Sunday, from state officials.

The rising caseload comes as large events, schools and restaurants and bars have effectively been shut down as authorities urge the public to use "social distancing" to help stem the spread of COVID-19. Two counties, Peoria and Will, have reported their first cases of coronavirus, which is considered potentially deadly to elderly people and persons with underlying health conditions. Most of the Illinois cases are in Cook County and Chicago.

The mandate on bars and restaurants temporarily restricts dine-in service, but carryouts and orders can continue.

Last night, the @CDCgov announced its strictest national recommendations to date, advising against gatherings of 50 people or more for the next eight weeks. As a result, I am mandating that any gathering of 50 or more be canceled in the state of Illinois.
