CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As the GOP Convention continues, Illinois Republican leaders are sounding their own alarms about efforts to expand mail-in voting, as people express fears about casting ballots in person because of COVID-19.

Many of the evening's convention speeches sounded the theme that if Democrats regain the White House, they will be a danger to the suburbs, the Second Amendment, freedom of religion, and more. 


But, when President Trump, himself, appeared before the delegates in Charlotte, who had just renominated him, he mostly spoke about mail-in voting, which he said would corrupt the election.

Richard Porter, a national GOP Committeeman from Illinois was in the room, and later told other Republicans mail balloting could severely delay the vote counting, too. 

"Everyone's used to staying up late on Election Night, and waiting for the results to come in, and seeing them called by AP and stuff. You're going to be doing that almost at Christmastime," Porter said.

He said Republicans are fighting some attempts to expand mail balloting.
