Illinois Senate Passes $40B Budget, But More Work Lies Ahead

Springfield
Springfield, Illinois.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Senate voted early Saturday morning to approve a $40 billion spending plan for the budget year that begins July 1 as the General Assembly entered its overtime session.

State Rep. Dan Brady (R-Bloomington) helped make the billion dollar state budget a bipartisan vote.

He said his constituents want him to do four things to make the budget successful and accessible: create a balance, pay down debt, fund and stabilize pensions and help education.

"This budget does that, ladies and gentlemen" Brady said.

But the budget still needs some finagaling, and the House will have to discuss that and many other propsals on the table. It will be a busy today when they reconvene at 12 p.m.

An infrustructure plan and the big-debated sports betting plan will be on the agenda today. Latest reports indicate Mayor Lightfoot does not like the current sports betting bill as it stands.
