CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- While President Trump has delayed mass ICE raids and deportations, local immigrant-rights groups are preparing for the possibility -- whenever it may come.

CEO of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights Lawrence Benito chalks up the president's announced plans and then postponement as a political ploy.

But that doesn't mean he's not taking the threat seriously.

Benito says his organization is making sure their volunteers and members have what they need to direct those facing deportation to resources.

"You're not alone. There are people and organizations willing to help should you have any questions," Benito said.

The group created rapid response teams and a hotline during the Obama administration.

For now, Benito is celebrating local victories such as the state and city of Chicago's refusal to work with the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
