Lakeview Bar Guthries Tavern Says It's Closing Permanently

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A longtime Lakeview bar within walking distance of Wrigley Field has announced it won't reopen after the city's latest order to close.

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of Guthrie's Tavern," the business posted Monday night on social media.

"With the new restrictions set today for bars and the ongoing COVID restrictions, we don't see a way we can survive."

Mayor Lightfoot on Monday said her administration was prohibiting indoor service at non-restaurant bars and taverns, beginning Friday, amid a rise in coronavirus cases.

Bars and taverns that are able to serve patrons outdoors can continue to do so; Guthries does not offer the service. The businesses were already trying to emerge from the devastating effects of an earlier stay-at-home order due to the pandemic.

Guthries, 1300 W. Addison St., is in a commercial space that was once a corner grocery dating back to 1900, the bar's website said. After Prohibition, it became a tap. The current owners took over the spot in 1986, opening it as Guthries.

The bar has become known as a place for people to play board games and also for its artwork displayed on walls.

Guthries will have its final last-round call on Thursday night, owners said.

"We have loved serving you for the past 34 years. We got to meet and know so many amazing wonderful people. Amazing people who turned into regulars, who turned into close friends and it was an absolute pleasure to get to know you all."
