CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot stresses Chicago police are not cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to help round up undocumented people, despite a report to the contrary.WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports from City Hall.

According to the report, ICE has a Memorandum of Understanding that says the department can deputize Chicago police officers as customs agents.


Lightfoot said under the memorandum, the Department of Homeland Security – not ICE, which is under it -- can deputize police officers.

CPD officers would be used for activities such as combatting drug trafficking and for counter-terrorism. She says the agreement specifically states that they are not involved with immigration enforcement.On Wednesday, the Chicago City Council strengthened the city's "Welcoming City" ordinance. Lightfoot said the measure makes the restrictions abundantly clear.

Immigration advocates applauded the action.
