Major Local Races To Watch In Illinois Primary

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Tuesday's voting includes a couple of big, county-wide primary races. The biggest of them is the hotly contested race for Cook County State's Attorney.WBBM Newsradio's Political Editor Craig Dellimore has more.Incumbent State's Attorney Kim Foxx could have had an easy time of her re-election primary bid, with the backing of the Cook County Democratic Party and her mentor Toni Preckwinkle. But, her three primary challengers have hammered away at her mishandling of one case, the false hate-crime report of actor Jussie Smollett.

Bill Conway has used millions of his family’s money to run ads attacking Foxx for allegedly catering to the rich and famous. Former prosecutor Donna More touts her experience. And Former Alderman Bob Fioretti, a frequent candidate, has courted the law enforcement vote.  Foxx has run on a record of Criminal Justice Reform.The race to replace the “retiring” Clerk of the Circuit Court—Dorothy Brown—may revolve around turnout.

The Democratic Primary for Cook County Circuit Court Clerk is a heated four-way race for an office that often gets little attention. But, with some 1,400 employees and the responsibility of staffing and keeping records for the massive court system, it’s powerful.Michael Cabonargie, head of the Board of Review, is the party’s endorsed candidate, Democratic regulars could overcome his lack of name recognition. Former County Board member Richard Boykin is known for fighting Toni Preckwinkle’s soft drink tax. Attorney Jacob Meister has run for the job before. And State Senator Iris Martinez, the first Latina Senator, has been a majority leader in Springfield.Who shows up and in what numbers may decide this one.
