Mayoral Candidates Talk Campaign Finance, Schools

Chicago City Hall

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Candidates for Chicago mayor argued Friday about campaign finance, among other topics, at their latest forum.

WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore was the moderator of the event, which was held at the Union League Club.

County Board President Toni Preckwinkle told the packed audience she tries to raise money from a broad range of sources. She said we live in a time when it is hard for someone who is not wealthy to run for office.

Former Chicago police superintendent Garry McCarthy looked at Preckwinkle — who’s returned money donated to her by embattled Ald. Ed Burke — in mock disbelief. He said candidates should stop taking money from special interests, such as unions.

Rival Lori Lightfoot said the problem is the local Democrats, led by Preckwinkle. She said the party squelches independence.Preckwinkle countered she’s brought reform to the party.

On another topic, former Chicago school board President Gery Chico said he favors a Board of Education made up of some appointed members and some elected.Former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas said he also favors a hybrid board but would want Local School Councils to choose the public members.

McCarthy raised eyebrows when he referred to the CPS sex-abuse scandal. He said sending your children to CPS was like dangling your kids over a tank of piranhas.

Willie Wilson also took part in Friday’s forum.
