More Churches Around Illinois Holding In-Person Services

NW Side Church Holds Service Despite Fines, Closure Threats

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An increasing number of churches are holding in-person services this Sunday as the state enters its second week in Phase 3 of reopening.

At Holy Cross in Batavia, parishioners used an online sign-up to claim some of the 240 spots inside the Catholic church for each service.

Those attending must wear masks and had to enter and exit in waves from the church, which is in the Rockford Diocese.

Father James Parker announced several changes ahead of 9:30 a.m. mass that was also streamed online – including increased sanitation and putting collection bags near exits instead of passing baskets among the pews.

In Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot laid out guidelines for in-person services as part of her "Be Safe. Places of Worship" plan.

It set limits of 50 people in one room, required staggered entrance and exit times,  mask-wearing and frequent sanitizing.
