CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Aldermen are working through differences and doubts about proposals for a civilian oversight board for the Chicago Police Department.
A key Committee chairman hopes a compromise is near.
Ald. Patrick Thompson of the 11th Ward wondered aloud whether Chicago needs another panel looking over police policies and procedures, given that there is a police board; an Inspector General and a Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
Experts like Barry Friedman, with the NYU Law School’s Policing Project, told aldermen that well-crafted civilian oversight is vital. He said he hopes something can be in place before a new police superintendent is selected.
