(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago-based medic from the Illinois National Guard has a new honor in Elgin, more than a year after his death.

Sgt. Marcos Gudino was in a convoy making its way back from training in Wisconsin in March 2018 when there was a crash on I-90.

The 30-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

"He was about to start his life as a Streamwood Police officer," said Illinois state Sen. Cristina Castro. "It was devastating to the family."

Castro crafted a resolution in the Senate to name the Route 31 bridge over U.S. 20 the Marcos L. Gudino Bridge.

"He made the ultimate sacrifice," Castro said. "I want people who see this bridge, especially those who know him, to smile every time they cross it."

The sign was unveiled at a Sunday morning ceremony that Frank Gudino called "amazing."

"He keeps living in our hearts," he said of his late son. "We'll be able to see it every time we drive by ... It means a lot to us."
