CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A defense attorney is asking for a new trial for the woman serving a life sentence for the murder of former Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle's pregnant girlfriend.

Jed Stone said Wednesday they have new evidence that will show Marni Yang did not murder Rhoni Reuter in 2007.

Private detective Perry Myers said the Baretta pistol that Lake County prosecutors claim Yang used to kill Reuter was stolen before the murder and investigators ignored the confession of the man who took it.

Stone has petitioned the Lake County courts, saying Yang's father told him under oath that his daughter falsely confessed to save her son from being prosecuted.

Andrew Yang was 16 years old at the time of the murder and suicidal after he says police accused him of committing it.

Citing the pending litigation, a spokesman for the Lake County State's Attorney's office declined comment.
