Palatine High School Student Brings Gun To Class

Police Siren

PALATINE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Palatine High School officials said a student who brought a handgun to school Tuesday morning told police he did it because he'd been getting threats.

Around 11 a.m. two staff members discovered a ninth-grade student had concealed a firearm in his belongings. The weapon was wrapped in a sweatshirt the student left at his desk, Principal Tony Medina said in an email to parents.

The student was taken into police custody. A school resource officer was already nearby for an unrelated matter, officials said.

The student reportedly said he had the weapon because he had been receiving threats in the community.

As a precaution, additional police officers will be on campus.

"We are grateful for our vigilant staff, and we always encourage anyone with information pertaining to school safety to report it immediately," Medina said in the email.
