ELGIN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Elgin police say they are trying to find the person who opened fire near a school yesterday afternoon that wounded a teenage girl.
At around 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Elgin police said multiple shots were fired near the intersection of Washburn and Billings Streets outside Lowrie Elementary School from one vehicle to another. The 14-year-old girl was shot in the crossfire between vehicles, though it was not clear if she was in the car at the time of the shooting, police said.
Police said the shooting was not random but that the girl was not the target. She was found in a vehicle nearby at intersection of Highland Avenue and State Street and taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition.
The teen is a student at Ellis Middle School in Elgin, according to a note sent to the Ellis staff early Wednesday morning by Principal Yvette González-Collins, according to the Elgin Courier-News.
Detectives from the Special Investigations Group are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Elgin Police Sgt. David Lesko at 847-289-2528.
