BERRIEN COUNTY, MICH. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Powerful wind storms brought significant damage to parts of the southwestern corner of Michigan.

Strong winds whipped up 12- to 15-foot waves on Lake Michigan, which came crashing in on portions of a Stevensville road in Berrien County. That part of the roadway, about 36 miles north of South Bend, Ind., has been closed since October.

"Where before, all summer long, people were using that to get to Lake Michigan and enjoy the beach. Now there is just nothing there anymore," Don Goulooze of the Berrien County Sheriff's Department told CBS 22 in South Bend.

Goulooze said this recent erosion has caused parts of the road to fall down a bluff.

"They are to the point now that they aren't safe to use," he explained. "So we work with the townships and they are either blocked off or taped off, and you know, do not enter."

One neighborhood association paid to have rocks placed down to try and slow the erosion.

If more storms come through this winter, officials are worried the damage could make access to homes impossible.

CBS 22 also reported the Berrien County Road Department is keeping a close eye on this issue, but it's an expensive repair.
