CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle was touting her experience and her progressive credentials on Wednesday morning as she greeted voters at the CTA's 95th Street Red Line stop.
"I'm the most progressive candidate in this race," she said.
Preckwinkle has been County Board President for eight years. She was an alderman for 28 years. And she's now the Chair of the Cook County Democratic Party, making her the leader of the Democratic Machine; what opponent Lori Lightfoot calls "the crumbling machine."
Preckwinkle wasn't interested in dissecting how it was that a newcomer with little money at the bottom of a crowded ballot came to finish the race ahead of her; but she repeatedly noted that she's progressive, pointing to her vote as an alderman against the parking meter deal, her efforts as County Board President to reform the bond system, allowing more non-violent offenders to get out of jail and the fact that after she became party boss, the party, for the first time in memory, opposed retention for a sitting judge and the judge lost. She said she's grateful to be where she is today.
