(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A musical stageplay based on William Goldman's "The Princess Bride" -- now considered a classic tale, thanks to the beloved 1987 movie adaptation -- is in the works.
Playbill reported this week that the project is in an early development stage under Disney Theatrical Productions. Previous attempts over the years to adapt the property for Broadway have failed.
Author Goldman published "The Princess Bride" as a novel in 1973. It's a story-within-a-story about a grandfather who reads his ill grandson a swashbuckling romantic adventure with dark overtones.
Director Rob Reiner helmed the 1987 feature that starred Cary Elwes as Westley and Robin Wright as Buttercup, the heroes of the story, along with a supporting cast that included Mandy Patinkin as sympathetic swordsman Inigo Montoya; Andre the Giant as Fezzik; and Billy Crystal as Miracle Max.
The film was a moderate success when released but grew in stature over the years, largely thanks to cable and home video. Some of its lines, such as "As you wish," and "Inconceivable!", have become part of the lexicon.
Goldman, an Oscar-winning screenwriter who adapted his novel for Reiner's film, passed away last year.
