CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Governor JB Pritzker said he’s considering a statewide order that people wear masks in public places, like grocery stores, following a number of suburban communities who already have the requirement in place.

The Governor said he is thinking hard about requiring masks, which he is more or less been saying for some time.

"It is of grave concern to me when people are gathering in close proximity anywhere," Pritzker said, "and that is happening, most obviously anyway, at grocery stores. And so we have had a number of very good actors, honestly out there, who are at grocery stores doing the right things - they are putting markers on the floors about staying six feet apart, they are asking people to wear masks when they come in, maybe even requiring it.

"There are also actors out there who are not doing that, and that is what has led me to think hard about whether we should require people to wear masks when they go to public places like that; because if you are not wearing a mask and you are not keeping socially distant - I mean those two things together lead to people getting sick," Pritzker said.

More than a half dozen suburban communities now have mask requirements. The latest to join are Evanston and Oak Lawn, along with Northbrook, Niles, Cicero, Highland Park, Wilmette, and Morton Grove.
