CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The storm that tore through the north part of Waukegan Tuesday night was an an EF1 tornado with estimated peak winds of 90 miles an hour, the National Weather Service said Wednesday.
The tornado flipped over a car and did some damage to signs and commercial buildings. One person received minor injuries as the tornado materialized and touched down about 2 miles from the lakefront, not far from Waukegan Airport.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Matt Friedlein told WBBM Newsradio even though conditions were right for rotating storms, this tornado was remarkable.
"This storm intensified pretty quickly, and we see that at times, and we're still learning. And we're going to be looking at this event for the coming days and weeks," he said.
Friedlein said there was also a waterspout in the lake.
