CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio) — Hundreds of protesters marched in Chicago’s Lake View neighborhood Friday to demand creation of an elected civilian panel that would oversee the Chicago Police Department.

Demonstrators gathered outside the 19th District Chicago Police Station on Addison Street, near Wrigley Field, and marched to the office of local Ald. Tom Tunney to demand his support. They tied green ribbons at the closed office, WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller reports.

Creation of a Civilian Police Accountability Council has long been a demand of police critics. The independent CPAC would have the power to hire and fire a police superintendent and discipline errant officers; the latter function is now handled by the Chicago Police Board.

Proponents say the proposed CPAC is as relevant as ever, in the wake of the racially charged death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. In Chicago, some police officers have been accused of brutality or inappropriate behavior during recent protests.
