CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Roseland church that has been there for people in need on Chicago's South Side finds itself requiring help after a devastating fire on Monday.
The fire began on the second floor of Beacon Light Ministries where Bishop Jerome Powell said they kept donations of food, clothing, and supplies to give out to those in need.
"We have a food pantry we give out every Sunday. We give out food, perishable foods every Sunday and clothes every Sunday.
Bishop Powell said he and other members of Beacon Light Ministries were on their way to the Shedd Aquarium around noon Monday, when they got the call about the fire.
"The church is gone...you can see straight through the place now, from the front to the back. There is nothing left but two walls," he said.
After more than 15 years of collecting donations to distribute to people struggling in Roseland and the surrounding area, the ministry is asking for help for itself.
They've set up a GoFundMe campaign for donations.
WBBM Newsradio spoke to Bishop Powell six hours after the fire was put out and asked if he knew where they will hold church services going forward, but he said he wasn't sure.
While stunned by the fire, he is grateful no one was there or seriously hurt, as members had just come from there on their way to celebrate the Martin Luther King holiday.
"Thank God for Jesus," Powell said.
