BATAVIA, ILL. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- This Flag Day, hundreds of American flags are lining the streets of Batavia as part of a special tradition.
Starting a little after dawn, members of Boy Scout Troop 6 in Batavia began posting U.S. flags in the front yards of about 750 people. Coordinating the Flags over the Batavia event is Steve Drews, who said this is the ninth year of the event and they make sure to post multiple flags outside the old home of Bernard Cigrand. Cigrand, who is considered to be the founder of Flag Day, lived in Batavia from around 1912 or 1913, depending on who you ask, until his death in 1932.
Among those posting in his uniform and saluting the flags on his route was Drews' son, Phillip.
The event is a fundraiser for the troop and so popular there’s a waiting list.
For $25 raised, the Scouts will post flags today as well as on Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.
