CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The virtual realm has become more important than ever for people who are observing "stay at home" orders.

It's no vacation, right? Cindy Richards begs to differ, up to a point.

The editor-in-chief of Traveling Mom website says several cultural institutions and attractions offer virtual tours. So, in a way, it's like "travel from home."

"The wonders of the Internet can bring everything into our houses," Richards tells Cisco Cotto as part of the latest WBBM In Depth podcast. "You can tour museums, you can look at the art work in the Uffizi in Italy, you can walk around the British Museum. Closer to home we have some really cool stuff."

She says the Shedd Aquarium and Brookfield Zoo been very creative on social media, showing off the animals during closures.

For parents who are home-schooling their children, Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry offers educational material on its website.

In Depth this week focuses on the ways the digital world is helping people stay connected during the mandated "social distancing" during the COVID-19 outbreak.
