HAMMOND, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Authorities are looking for a man who bit an Indiana State Trooper and abandoned a child in a car while fleeing a traffic stop Saturday on the Indiana Toll Road in Hammond.
The trooper pulled over a silver Mitsubishi for an equipment violation about 4:50 a.m. near the 1.2 mile marker on Interstate 90, according to a statement from Indiana State Police.
The driver refused to identify himself and became combative when the trooper tried to take him into custody, state police said. He bit the trooper on the arm and started to run away.
The trooper used a stun gun on the man with no effect, according to state police. While the man ran across the highway, a 6-year-old child who was riding in the Mitsubishi got out of the car and got “precariously close to passing traffic.”
After instructing the child to get back in the car, the trooper chased the man across the highway and into an area with thick brush, state police said. A police dog was brought in but was unable to locate the driver.
The child was reunited with their mother at the scene and the car was impounded, according to state police. The trooper was treated for his bite wound and released.
Investigators are still trying to identify and locate the man, state police said.
