CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson joined anti-violence activists Tuesday at the Thompson Center, calling for tighter laws on who should get and keep guns.
The advocates want a law that tightens up Illinois' Firearm Owners Identification Act, especially in wake of the shootings at Aurora's Henry Pratt Company. The shooter had weapons, despite a previous felony conviction and having his FOID card revoked. Johnson agreed that people who have FOID cards revoked should lose their guns, too. Johnson told the small crowd outside the Thompson Center that Illinois State Police need more resources to confiscate guns from people who have their FOID cards revoked.
Johnson said there should be universal background checks, so that even private transactions need to have a check by a licensed gun dealer. Until we tighten our gun laws, violence such as what Chicago experienced this past weekend will continue, the superintendent said.
