GLENVIEW (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Authorities are searching for a man they say tried robbing a north suburban bank branch over the weekend -- without ever stepping inside.
The FBI says the man tried robbing a Chase Bank in Glenview Saturday afternoon from the drive-thru window.
"The first thing that comes to mind is, 'Stupid,'" Ross Rice, a security consultant for CBS Chicago, tells WBBM Newsradio. The former FBI agent said he can't recall a robber ever trying to use a bank drive-thru, for "obvious reasons."
"Bank robbery is a high-risk, low-reward enterprise," Rice said. "For someone to think that they could go through a drive-thru and actually get money from a bank -- I don't get it."
Rice said he's heard of other states encountering would-be-robbers with the same approach who relied on what appeared to be explosives or dangerous chemicals.
"Obviously, it turned out to be a benign device or faux chemical that wasn't real. This is very rare. Most bank robbers go inside the bank and they try and commit the robbery in person."
The same man is suspected of robbing a U.S. Bank branch in Franklin Park last month.
The FBI says the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.
