(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Rough waters on Lake Michigan led organizers of the Chicago Triathlon to eliminate the swim portion of Sunday’s race.
Life Time Triathlon staffers had been monitoring the Lake for the last three days and made the call at 4:30 a.m. -- about 90 minutes before the first wave of athletes would have gone in the water.
Life Time Manager Scott Hutmacher said the race attracts 10,000 participants and about 30 percent are doing it for the first time, so they erred on the side of caution.
Most athletes interviewed by WBBM Newsradio were disappointed but expressed understanding, given conditions in the lake.
Organizers converted the swim leg of the race into another run portion, right along the lake so the runners could see the waves.
