(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A sudden shortage of lifeguards has led to a ban on swimming at the Indiana Dunes State Park until Labor Day Weekend.
Ginger Murphy, deputy director for stewardship for Indiana State Parks, said officials are not at liberty to say why the shortage happened or why it’s expected to end soon.
However, she said the shortage is expected to be over in time for swimming on Sept. 5.
Murphy said people may be disappointed, given all of the closures at other beaches during the pandemic this summer. But she notes the Dunes’ hiking trails and a nature center remain open.
