ST. CHARLES (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A western suburb will soon make it easier for residents to turn their organic garbage into fertilizer and to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills. The city of St. Charles says that, on April 6, residents may start putting organic material such as fruits and vegetable scraps, teabags and coffee filters in with their yard waste so that they may be composted.

Residents are advised to put the organics into either a brown paper yard waste bag or a special Lakeshore Recycling Services yard waste cart.  St. Charles spokeswoman Lisa Garhan says: "There are a couple of other communities in the area that are taking advantage of this program as well, but we like it just because it makes composting so easy for our residents to use."The service will run only when yard waste is picked up, generally from April through November. There’ll be an information session at the St. Charles Public Works facility next month
