(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Two dogs died and a third became ill after their owner allegedly left them in a vehicle for hours outside a Michigan casino over the weekend.

Sherill Langford faces felony charges of torturing or killing an animal and misdemeanor charges, including lying to a police officer, the Associated Press reports.

Langford is due in court April 17.

Prosecutors say she left three dogs in the vehicle Sunday at Four Winds Casino in Dowagiac, Michigan, near the Indiana border. Someone notified security about the animals; two died, while a third recovered from severe dehydration.

"When you have an animal, you need to take care of it and you need to protect it, because you are responsible for the life of that animal," Prosecutor Victor Fitz told WSBT.
